How refreshing that Helena Bonham Carter, a talented actress, is promoting learning to be a better mum. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1331657/Helena-Bonham-Carter-I-need-help-better-mother.html?ito=feeds-newsxml
It’s a shame that, as a society, we still seem to assume that parenting should just come naturally and that to attend parenting classes is in some way an admission of failure. Parenting is arguably the most important and challenging role we’ll ever take on so all the more reason to open up to learning and developing new skills.
I empathise with feelings of disorientation and inadequacy on becoming a parent, desperately wanting to be as successful at parenting as we are in our professional careers. For me, it was training in NLP that helped me identify the things that I needed to do differently to become happier, confident and more effective as a parent. Learning effective communication skills – taken for granted in my relationships with adults – made all the difference in how I approach situations with my young children, building mutual confidence, respect, and happiness in our developing relationships.
I’m delighted Helena Bonham Carter has raised this issue and hope it will inspire others to embrace parenting as a learning journey.
